Embossing

Embossing is a printing technique derived from the minting of coins during antiquity.

First, a reverse intaglio engraving is prepared, traditionally in brass. Digital engraving is becoming more widespread, and chemical etching is sometimes used as well, but for some patterns the human touch is irreplaceable.

The resulting tool is then placed on a mechanical press that applies 2.5 metric tons of pressure. The sheets of paper are passed through the press, one by one, so that the shape of the engraving is printed on them as a relief.

Créanog helped to create a collection of books designed for the visually impaired. Embossing is used for specially reworked architectural drawings, so that these images could be read by touch. The exceptional depth of the recessed areas and particularly sharp edges make this tactile reading possible.
